Wellness Training
Beginner Water Aerobics
Increase your aerobic and muscular fitness and flexibility in a safe, low-impact environment. Class starts with simple exercise combinations basic to water fitness. Confident participants can choose to move into more challenging and complex classes.
Beginner Water Therapy
For newcomers and those deciding whether water therapy is appropriate.
This class meets twice a week.
Basic Strength Training:
Boost your metabolic rate and self-esteem while improving joint stability, posture and increasing your strength. The instructor will develop a personalized program to fit your needs. Weights as low as two to five pounds can be used (see page 24).
First Step Fitness:
Designed to meet your needs, this 12-week program starts slow, then moves into strength exercise, with gentle support from our friendly, positive trainers. And once you’ve begun a new habit through FSF, you can move up to Y-Boost (see page 22).
Flexibility Challenge: This half-hour class offers flexibility training to tone and stretch muscles. A gentle workout, this class is appropriate for those with some physical limitations (see page 26).

Yoga:
Yoga classes teach movement awareness, alignment and breath work. It’s a great low-stress practice for those not inclined to more demanding exercise (see page 26).
SilverSneakers®
1.Muscular Strength & Range of Movement Move to the music in exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing and a ball are used for resistance; chairs can be used for support. (AR) (G)
5 Week Exercise Adherence Studies
In order to expand our knowledge base and skills for working with the “health seeker” population, the Y will conduct three 5 week Exercise Adherence Studies during the up-coming year.
Objective:
To determine the general effect of internal and external barriers on exercise adherence.
Criteria for participation:
• 30lbs. or more overweight.
• Cannot have been active (exercising) for a year or more.
• Doctor approval or recommendation.
• Not a current member of the Y.
• Has not participated in a previous Y Exercise
Adherence Study.
The free program gives unlimited access the private FitLife Center. Participants will be asked to fill out weekly surveys, in addition to meeting their exercise goals.
Our first study will be specifically targeted to:
Pre-diabetes and Type II Diabetes population.
It will run September 20th through October 25th, 2010 and include presentations from Baystate Franklin Medical Center Diabetes Educator, Judy Kuzdeba.
These studies are only available to Non-Members

Introduction to Hooping Free to Y Members!
This entertaining class is all about cardio, core and connection!
Even if you were a “hoop failure” in the past, we guarantee success through this class. Hooping Harmony provides professional adult hoops and inspiring instruction for anyone who wants to get in shape, learn the fundamentals of Hoop Dance, feel good and have fun! Hooping helps you tone your whole body, boost your metabolism, find rhythm and coordination, learn to engage all 29 muscles of your core and laugh a lot while meeting wonderful people! Well-behaved children accompanied by a participating adult are welcome to join us; we encourage family and friends to work out together.

Walk Franklin County Program
A free walking program to help reduce our county’s incidence of health problems due to poor physical exercise.
This program aims to encourage people of all ages and abilities to become more active. With its focus on walking, it is designed for participants to use pedometers to track and report their steps. Milestones provide reachable goals for everyone to get moving. Maps, safety information and other helpful ideas are incorporated on the website.
This is a partnership with Baystate/Franklin Medical Center, Franklin County Chamber
